Other Modules

The ESP32 UWB DW3000 Ultra Wideband Module is a high-performance UWB development board designed for precision ranging, indoor positioning, real-time location tracking, and advanced wireless spatial sensing. It combines the Qorvo/Decawave DW3000 Ultra-Wideband transceiver with the powerful and versatile ESP32 microcontroller, providing developers with a compact, feature-rich platform for building next-generation wireless location-aware systems.

Ultra-Wideband (UWB) is a short-range wireless communication technology that uses radio pulses across a wide frequency spectrum to enable highly accurate distance measurement, secure communication, and precision sensing. Compared with conventional RF technologies such as Bluetooth or WiFi alone, UWB can deliver much more accurate ranging and spatial awareness, making it ideal for indoor navigation, asset tracking, robotics, proximity detection, and smart access systems.

This board uses the DW3000 UWB transceiver, which is the newer generation following earlier popular modules based on the DW1000. Compared with older DW1000-based solutions such as DWM1000, the DW3000 offers several important advantages. It is aligned with FiRa™ PHY for future ecosystem compatibility, supports UWB Channel 5 (6.5GHz) and Channel 9 (8GHz), and provides significantly lower power consumption—approximately one-third of older DW1000-based modules in many use cases. According to the provided manufacturer notes, the DW3000 is also described as interoperable with Apple’s U1 ecosystem at the IC level, although practical support depends on available firmware, demos, and application-layer implementation.

The integrated ESP32 microcontroller gives this board much more than just UWB functionality. With built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, the ESP32 allows the module to connect to networks, communicate with mobile devices, upload data to cloud systems, or serve as a wireless control and monitoring node. This makes the board highly suitable for IoT applications, smart home systems, industrial automation, and location-enabled embedded devices.

Designed with developers and makers in mind, the board is Arduino compatible and supports easy firmware development with available examples and demos. The inclusion of a USB connector simplifies programming and power supply, making prototyping faster and easier. The board accepts USB supply voltage from 4.8V to 5.5V (5.0V typical), offering convenient direct powering from USB sources.

Because it combines high-accuracy UWB ranging, ESP32 wireless connectivity, Arduino compatibility, and modern DW3000 capabilities, this module is an excellent platform for building real-time location systems (RTLS), precision indoor tracking, distance measurement systems, robot navigation, secure presence detection, and other spatially aware wireless applications.
