Lithium Coin Cell Battery

3V lithium coin cells (CR series). These are primary (non-rechargeable) cells built on lithium chemistry, and the Panasonic cells use lithium manganese dioxide (LiMnO2). They deliver a stable 3V output, high energy density, and very low self-discharge. Under proper storage they keep most of their capacity for up to 10 years, and the Panasonic CR2032 retains about 90% of its capacity after ten years. The CR code shows the size: the first two digits are the diameter in millimeters, and the last two digits are the thickness in tenths of a millimeter. For example, CR2032 is 20 mm wide and 3.2 mm thick. From the thinnest to the largest, the range includes:

• CR1220 (12 mm): a very small cell for compact devices and laser pointers.
• CR1632 (16 mm): a common choice for car key fobs, and a replacement for DL1632.
• CR2016 (20 mm, 1.6 mm thick): a slim cell for thin devices and garage door remotes.
• CR2025 (20 mm, 2.5 mm thick): a mid-thickness cell for key fobs and watches.
• CR2032 (20 mm, 3.2 mm thick): the most widely used coin cell, with up to 225 mAh capacity.
• CR2430 (24.5 mm, 3.0 mm thick): a larger cell for scales, remotes, and medical monitors.
• CR2450 (24.5 mm, 5.0 mm thick): the highest capacity in the range, at 620 mAh on the Panasonic version.

Where stated, the cells are mercury-free and leak-resistant. They also carry UL recognition (Panasonic) and cadmium-free and lead-free construction (Philips CR2032).

Rechargeable cell. The Panasonic VL2330 is a 3V rechargeable lithium coin cell with a capacity of 50 mAh and a size of 23 x 3 mm. Unlike the CR series, it can be recharged, so it must be used in devices designed for a rechargeable cell.

Silver oxide watch cells. The Murata SR626SW (377) and Murata SR621SW (364) are 1.55V silver oxide cells made in Japan. They keep a flat discharge curve, which helps quartz watches keep accurate time until the cell is nearly empty. Both are mercury-free with a low-drain design. The SR626SW is a direct replacement for AG4, SR66, 376, 377, and 626. The SR621SW replaces AG1, SR60, 363, 364, and 621. The slim 2.1 mm SR621SW suits thin and ladies' watches.

Important: Never mix voltages. The 1.55V silver oxide cells are not interchangeable with 3V lithium cells. Always match the model code, and do not recharge, short-circuit, disassemble, or incinerate primary cells.
