The Sharp GP2Y0A21YK0F IR Range Sensor is one of the most popular and trusted infrared distance measuring sensors in the maker and robotics community. Designed by Sharp Corporation, this sensor delivers accurate, continuous distance readings within a range of 10 cm (~4 inches) to 80 cm (~30 inches) by emitting an infrared beam and detecting its reflection through an integrated PSD (Position Sensitive Detector).

The sensor outputs a continuous analog voltage that is proportional to the distance of the detected object, allowing easy interfacing with any microcontroller's ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter) input — including Arduino, ESP32, STM32, Raspberry Pi (with ADC), and PIC. The simple 3-wire interface (VCC, GND, Vo) and included JST connection cable make installation and prototyping fast and hassle-free.

Unlike ultrasonic sensors, the GP2Y0A21YK0F is immune to acoustic noise and works reliably with soft, sound-absorbing surfaces such as fabric, foam, and irregular shapes. Its compact form factor, low current consumption (~30 mA), and stable output make it an ideal choice for mobile robots, obstacle avoidance systems, security devices, and industrial automation.

This sensor is the modern replacement for the discontinued GP2D12 and is lead-free / RoHS compliant, ensuring environmentally friendly performance.
