The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 (set number 31313) is the third generation of LEGO's robotics platform, combining the creative flexibility of LEGO bricks with powerful programmable technology. This set allows users to build five official robot models: the tracked vehicle TRACK3R, the snake-like R3PTAR, the scorpion-inspired SPIK3R, the humanoid EV3RSTORM, and the gripping arm GRIPP3R. The core of the system is the EV3 Intelligent Brick – a programmable microcontroller with an ARM9 processor, 16MB flash memory, 64MB RAM, a 178x128 pixel LCD, and 4 input/output ports. The kit includes three servo motors (two large, one medium), two touch sensors, an infrared sensor, an infrared remote control, and a color sensor. Programming is done via an icon-based drag-and-drop interface on PC/Mac or via a free tablet/smartphone app (iOS/Android). The set contains 601 pieces, including gears, axles, beams, and connectors. Step-by-step 3D building instructions are provided. Users can share their own creations and download community projects from LEGO.com/mindstorms.
