The SparkFun Line Follower Array is a multi-sensor reflectance detection module developed for robotic navigation and line-following applications. The board incorporates eight QRE1113 infrared reflectance sensors, enabling precise detection of dark lines, light surfaces, and contrast patterns.
The sensor array is designed to follow dark lines approximately ¾ inch (19 mm) wide or smaller on a lighter background, such as electrical tape or painted guide paths. By reading eight sensors simultaneously, the module provides an 8-bit reflectance pattern, allowing robots to determine line position and make accurate steering decisions.
Communication is handled through an I2C interface, making integration with microcontrollers simple while minimizing GPIO usage. The onboard SX1509 I/O expander manages sensor inputs and control functions.
Users can adjust infrared illumination intensity using the onboard potentiometer, while software controls allow enabling or disabling the IR emitters and visual indicators to optimize power consumption. The module also supports software inversion of dark/light detection logic for different operating environments.
