The XBee Explorer Regulated is a breakout board that lets you connect any XBee module to 5V systems like Arduino Uno or Mega. It handles 3.3V regulation, MOSFET-based level shifting, and provides Power, RSSI, and DIN/DOUT activity LEDs. Compatible with all XBee modules (Series 1, Series 2, Standard, and Pro), it's perfect for wireless communication, IoT projects, sensor networks, and Arduino Pro wireless bootloading — all without the risk of damaging the 3.3V XBee.
The SparkFun XBee Explorer Regulated is a versatile breakout board designed to make working with XBee wireless modules as easy and safe as possible. XBee modules are powerful 2.4GHz wireless transceivers that operate at 3.3V logic levels, which means they cannot be safely connected directly to 5V microcontrollers like the Arduino Uno or Mega without proper voltage regulation and signal level shifting. This board solves both problems elegantly.
The Explorer Regulated includes an onboard 3.3V voltage regulator (accepting up to 16V input) and a MOSFET-based bidirectional level shifter that safely converts between 5V and 3.3V serial signals. This allows you to power the entire setup from a standard 5V supply while keeping your XBee module fully protected. The latest revision replaces the older diode-based level shifter with a more robust MOSFET design, providing cleaner signals and improved reliability, especially at higher baud rates.
For diagnostic feedback, the board includes four onboard status LEDs: Power, RSSI (signal strength), DIN (data in), and DOUT (data out), allowing you to instantly verify that your XBee is powered, connected, and actively communicating. The board also features a standard 2mm pitch XBee socket for the module itself and breaks out all the important serial and programming pins to 0.1" header pins along the edge — making it fully breadboard friendly and easy to integrate with custom PCBs.
The XBee Explorer Regulated is also conveniently designed to mate directly with Arduino Pro boards, enabling wireless bootloading and wireless configuration of remote nodes. This makes it an ideal companion for mesh networks, remote sensor nodes, telemetry systems, and wireless control projects.
Note: This board does not include an XBee module — the XBee module must be purchased separately. The board is compatible with all XBee modules, including Series 1, Series 2, ZigBee, 802.15.4, and the Pro variants.
