5.0(1 review)
SKU: ME-654
JD1.50

The L78S05CV is a high-current 5V linear voltage regulator in a TO-220 package, capable of delivering up to 2A of output current. With an input range of 10V to 35V, it provides stable, regulated 5V power for microcontrollers, sensors, LEDs, and breadboard projects. Built-in thermal shutdown and current limiting protect the device and your circuit. Its 3-pin TO-220 form factor makes it ideal for prototyping and permanent installations alike.

Regulators

The L78S05CV is a fixed +5V positive linear voltage regulator from the popular 78xx series, designed to deliver up to 2 A of continuous output current — twice the capacity of the standard 7805. Housed in the industry-standard TO-220 package, it is a reliable choice for powering 5V logic circuits, microcontrollers, and small electronic loads from higher unregulated DC sources.

Voltage regulators are essential components in nearly every electronic device. They take a higher, often unstable input voltage and step it down to a clean, fixed output, dissipating the excess energy as heat. This makes them invaluable when you need to derive multiple voltage rails from a single power supply, or when you want to protect sensitive components from voltage fluctuations.

The L78S05CV requires an input voltage at least 5V higher than the output (the dropout voltage), so a minimum of 10 V on the input is needed to maintain a clean, regulated 5 V output. The maximum input voltage is 35 V. The device features internal current limiting, thermal shutdown protection, and a typical line regulation of around 4%, ensuring stable performance even under varying load conditions.

For best results, place a 0.33 μF capacitor on the input and a 0.10 μF capacitor on the output, especially if the regulator is located more than 25 cm (10 inches) from the power source — this filters out line noise and improves stability. For low-noise-tolerant applications such as simple LED circuits, these capacitors can sometimes be omitted, but they are strongly recommended for clean power applications like phone chargers or audio circuits.

Important: The L78S05CV generates heat proportional to the voltage difference and current draw. For larger input-to-output voltage drops or higher currents, a heatsink is strongly recommended to prevent thermal shutdown. As a rule of thumb — if it feels too hot to touch, it is too hot.
