The RAMPS 1.4 Shield (RepRap Arduino Mega Pololu Shield) is the most popular control board for 3D printers and CNC machines. Designed to plug directly onto an Arduino Mega 2560, it supports up to 5 Pololu-style stepper drivers (A4988 or DRV8825). With protective fuses, PWM-controlled MOSFETs for heaters and fans, SD card expansion, and servo support for auto-bed leveling, RAMPS 1.4 is the go-to choice for RepRap builds like Prusa i2 and i3.
The RAMPS 1.4 (RepRap Arduino Mega Pololu Shield) is an all-in-one control board designed to act as the central hub for 3D printer and CNC machine electronics. It mounts directly onto an Arduino Mega 2560, which serves as the brain of the system, while RAMPS 1.4 handles power distribution, motor driver sockets, heater control, and sensor connections.
The shield accepts up to five Pololu-compatible stepper driver modules (such as A4988 or DRV8825), allowing simultaneous control of the X, Y, Z (dual motor parallel wiring supported), and extruder axes. The use of socketed pin headers makes it easy to replace damaged drivers or upgrade to higher-performance modules without soldering.
Three onboard MOSFETs manage the hotbed, hotend heater, and fan circuits, all controllable via PWM for precise temperature and speed regulation. Protection is built in through an 11 A fuse for the heated bed and a 5 A fuse for the rest of the components, safeguarding the electronics from overcurrent damage.
Reserved I2C, SPI, and RS232 interfaces, along with a servo motor port for auto bed leveling, make RAMPS 1.4 highly expandable. An optional SD card module can be attached for standalone printing without a computer. Status LEDs indicate the state of each MOSFET output for easy diagnostics.
Thanks to its stability, compatibility, and modularity, RAMPS 1.4 has become the standard control platform for RepRap-based 3D printers including the popular Prusa i2 and Prusa i3 designs.
